APRIL 30-MAY 3, WISCONSIN. Drive the  River Road to shop the 100-Mile Garage Sale. Residents and stores clean out their attics, garages and basements to create a spectacular 100-mile garage sale along the Mississippi River. The trail is marked with distinctive colored ribbons   from Fountain City on the southern end of the Wisconsin side, north along Wisconsin Highway 35 to Prescott, through Cochrane, Alma, Nelson, Pepin, Stockholm, Maiden Rock, Bay City and Diamond Bluff.

MAY 9, Cape May,  NEW JERSEY. The Sip Into Spring Festival with its Crafts and Collectibles Show fills the showplace grounds of the historic Physick Estate with an outdoor marketplace of arts, crafts, foods, drinks, families and good times. See demonstrations. Listen to music. Sample wines, beers and spirits. Admission is free.

MARCH 28, Elberta, ALABAMA The volunteer fire department in this tiny southern town holds its German Sausage Festival twice a year, a benefit that attracts foodies from all over the South to sample 6,000 pounds of a famous sausage tradition. Try sausage dogs with sauerkraut, run a 5K, hear music, dance the polka, shop the vendors and hang out with nice folks.  Other foods for sale include German style filled cabbage, potato salad, goulash, red beans and rice, hamburgers, hot dogs, BBQ sandwiches, ice cream, popcorn and baked goods. Elberta is about an hour west of Pensacola, Florida via U.S. 98.

March 7-8. 14-15, Mansfield, OHIO. The Malabar Farm Maple Syrup Festival, held noon-4p.m. each day is free but do bring money to buy maple fudge and other treats in the gift shop and to make a donation to the Central Ohio Draft Horse Association. Walk the 300-acre state park, take a carriage ride, see costumed characters as they re-create early Ohio farm life during sugaring-off season.

MARCH 7-8, Las Cruses, NEW MEXICO. Bring the whole family to the New Mexico Farm and Ranch Museum to  pay tribute to New Mexico’s ranching traditions at the Cowboy Days festival. Enjoy cowboy demonstrations, chuck wagon cooking, cowboy music, pony rides, children’s activities, roping and riding demonstrations, dancing, cowboy poets and storytellers.
Provision your boat, camper or home pantry with supermarket staples for emergencies both bad (power outage) and good (surprise visitors). This isn't about high-priced survival rations but about delicious ways to prepare stowed foods. Tips on all food emergencies too, such as fire, flood, refrigerator failure, no stove.  Kindle or  paperback.

BE PREPARED for the next  power outage, hurricane,  ice storm, flood, fire or other natural threat at home and away, ashore and afloat.

Janet Groene Bio

Updated January 1, 2020
My lance is free and always has been. Whether it's a one-time assignment or ongoing commitment from a truly professional freelance writer, I'm on the job. I'm an independent business person who writes, not an unemployed or wannabe "writer" who is "freelancing" while looking for a salaried job. I meet deadlines with professional copy.  Contact me at 386.658.1586 or I'm at my desk Eastern time 9-5 but may have limited e-mail access when I'm on the go.

Newest Book, January Justice, a Yacht Yenta Mystery, written under the pen name Farley Halladay.

 Janet Groene Bio
Janet Groene (GRAYnee) was a junior high school student when the local weekly newspaper hired her as a stringer at age 12. It was her first paid job as a freelance journalist.  More than two dozen books and thousands of magazine features later, Janet is a full-time writer whose lance remains free.

Groene began freelancing in earnest as a way to work at home and choose her own hours when her husband, Gordon, was a professional pilot. While still in their young 30's the couple sold everything, bought a sailing sloop and left cold winters behind. For ten years, the Groenes were happily homeless, sailing the tropics in winter and summering in their self-contained, 21-foot diesel RV.

It soon became clear that Janet’s writing and Gordon’s photography could sustain them in a new career as professional travelwriters. When assignments began taking them all over the world they  settled in Florida. Gordon died in 2016 and Janet continues to travel on her many assignments.
